(Prologue)
04-19-90 St. Joseph, MI
Soft continuous thunder
Rolling around
And surrounding
The town
Average Middle American
Homes all neat and mowed
Homogenized Hotels and
Right Restaurants
w/ wholesome waitresses
Foodstuffs raised in
Misery and tasting of it too
Everyone's dreams connect-
-ing
as one in the
Western Dream
Part 1 04-23-90
Massillon, OH
Ancient town of
the tiger
Under a river of stars
The deepest blue w/silver
Warm nights spell
Driven under lights
Spoken on corners
w/ the same tongue
All saying now,
"Come down night
Bring the big noise
And a little fun
It will be all right"
(BEDLAM BOYS -
- PLEASE LEAVE YOUR GUNS AT HOME TONIGHT)
Plush polished animals,
Goats and cats
Streaming up and down
Tusk Blvd.
Individualized microcosms
All alone, doing it together
With the precision of a
Fine Swiss watch or some
Divine living creature
I search the Southern Sky
Part 2 04-24-90 Columbus, OH
Last night's childhood memories
Dark pastel walls
w/ light gray feathers
Beamed from beyond the curtain
Sound of old Chicago
Roars in the window
Fading till dawn
Arise
A long ride in the country
Drivers barely aware of
Each other
Finding their way
My day is near
When I will find mine
The approach to the
Town of the Explorer
& Discoverer is smooth
& wide - from much use
Once was an Indian trail
The south side of the sky
Darkens again
Part
3 04-27-90 Cincinnati, OH
Great steeds of steel
Reined in by mere flesh & blood
Contempt for these riders
Too slow and in the way
Or too fast for safety
Insect cars flit by
w/ a jeering glance
And a lack of understanding
For what these men do
To benefit the masses
Jousting for position
Yet considerate of each other
They are out on the edge
Not understanding the
Other's contempt
And resentful of the 4 wheelers
Oh Great American Highway,
Leading to everywhere
& touching all lives
Piece together the broken
Dream
Part
4 04-28-90 Louisville, KY
America as an eagle
Flying on
Great mountain chain wings
Extended wide
Red & Blue latticed highway veins
South Peninsular talons
Hold tight the catch
And the innocent as well
Mitten of a head
Beak more a maw
Teeth of the city
Grinding steel & people
Together
Shitting out cars & tanks
Eyes of an eagle
Line it's wingspan
Vision acute
Coast to coast
American Knights (Epilogue)
04-30-90
Southern covenant
Northbound
Wind blows hard the
Rain which otherwise
Would fall as tears
Blowing you back up a hill
Rain driven back across your cheek
And even the strongest will
Nature will make seem weak
